Scania stands as the front runner of all alternative fuel trucks

Alternative fuel technology is becoming more attractive over the years. With the fluctuation in prices of petrol around the world and depletion of resources, switching to alternative fuel may just give humans the breathing space they need to get back on track. Scania is said to supply the most efficient alternative fuel technology. One of the alternative fuels, Bioethanol is one of the most efficient in reducing CO2 emissions from heavy vehicles, as inferred from a study carried out in Stockholm.  Stockholm has witnessed the operation of 50 fuel efficient trucks since 2010 and has been one of the largest recorded trials of renewable fuels for trucks. This Clean Truck Project was possible due to the management and funding of the City of Stockholm, in collaboration with the many fuel distributors and transport companies. These 50 trucks were run on dual fuel, hybrid electric-diesel and the bioethanol fuel ED95.
The evaluation of the results pointed to the Sania bioethanol truck as the clear winner with a nearly 70% reduction in CO2 emissions. ED95, produced from forestry waste gave rise to a reduction in CO2 emission by almost an appalling 90%. The Kyl-och Frysexpressen transport company in Stockholm operates the Scania bioethanol trucks. These are used to deliver fresh produce to food retailers in and around the area.
“After having operated ED95 trucks for a few years, we still firmly consider them, by far, as the best alternative fuel available,” says Managing Director Robert Barkensjö. “Of the options that presently exist, there’s simply no reason to look at other solutions.”

Barkensjö says that there is no marked difference in driving a bioethanol truck and a truck that runs on diesel. When asked what the pre-requisites were for bioethanol operations, Barkensjö replied “None at all, besides the fact that you need a heavy vehicles licence,” .
Scania offers a plethora of choices for heavy vehicle running on renewable fuels, which also include Biogas, Bioethanol and Biodiesel.
Scania offers the broadest range of heavy vehicles for renewable fuels, including biogas, bioethanol and biodiesel. ED95 is another ethanol based fuel, adapted for diesel engines. It comprises of 95% composition of pure ethanol with the remaining 5% attributing to ignition improver, lubricant and corrosion protection.
